These are compulsory at all times.

SPEED LIMITS
Unless specified otherwise the limits are 60km/h in built up areas, 90km/h on open roads, and 120km/h on motorways.

International road signs are used throughout Portugal.
TRAFFIC LIGHTS
Constant flashing amber lights indicate that you should proceed with caution. Most lights revert to flashing amber during the night time.
PARKING REGULATIONS
There are few yellow lines depicting parking restrictions, you will need to look for the restriction signs. A sign will specify the maximum time you can stay. In most of the larger towns there are parking metres for generally up to 2 hours. Please be aware that wheel clamps are now used to punish illegal parking.
ALCOHOL LIMITS
The police can randomly breathalise any driver. We strongly advise you not to drink at all if you are going to drive.
ACCIDENTS
In the event of an accident, do not, under any circumstances, admit liability or part with any money. Take full details of any other parties involved (name, address, insurance details) and co-operate fully with the police if necessary. Please advise your car hire company, and your representative immediately.
BREAKDOWNS/EMERGENCIES
Most major roads have orange 505 boxes every 500 metres - just push the button and speak. On other roads, call the fire/police (112), they will tow you to the nearest 24 hour emergency garage. Wherever possible, call your nearest care hire company's office first, the number is on the top of the car hire contract.
